High-Octane & Ethanol Radar
The Ultimate Guide to High-Octane Fuel & E20 in India
Everything you need to know about Research Octane Number (RON), knock suppression, ethanol blend percentages, and protecting your engine.
1. What is Octane (RON)?
Octane rating is a standard measure of a fuel's ability to withstand compression in an internal combustion engine without detonating (knocking). The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before spontaneously detonating.
When fuel auto-ignites prematurely before the spark plug fires, shockwaves slam against the piston crown and cylinder walls. Modern Engine Control Units (ECUs) use knock sensors to retard ignition timing to protect the engine, which immediately causes a loss in horsepower, torque, and throttle responsiveness.
2. Commercial Fuel Grades in India
The baseline fuel supplied across all standard Indian pumps. Formulated to meet BS-VI standards with up to 20% ethanol blending. Ideal for naturally aspirated commuter cars and low-compression motorcycles.
Premium 95 Octane gasoline formulated with specialized friction modifiers and detergent additives. Highly recommended for direct-injection turbocharged petrols (Skoda/VW 1.0/1.5/2.0 TSI, Hyundai 1.5 Turbo GDI, BMW TwinPower Turbo, Mercedes CGI) and performance bikes (KTM Duke 390, Triumph Speed 400, Kawasaki Ninja).
India's first 100 Octane premium fuel, produced by IndianOil Mathura Refinery. Designed specifically for ultra-high performance supercars (Porsche 911 GT3, Ferrari 296, Lamborghini Huracan) and superbikes (Ducati Panigale V4, BMW S1000RR) requiring maximum spark advance.
3. India's E20 Ethanol Blend Transition
As part of India's National Biofuel Policy, petrol across the country is being blended with up to 20% ethyl alcohol (ethanol) derived from sugarcane and grain feedstocks.
E20-Compliant Vehicles (Post-2023)
Vehicles manufactured with E20 certification feature anti-corrosive fuel lines, viton rubber seals, and updated ECU mapping to compensate for ethanol's lower energy density.
Pre-E20 & Imported Vehicles
Older cars and carbureted bikes may suffer from phase separation (water absorption), degradation of nitrile rubber gaskets, and clogged fuel injectors over prolonged storage.
4. Why Company-Owned (COCO) Pumps Matter
COCO (Company-Owned Company-Operated) outlets are directly managed by officers from IndianOil, HPCL, or BPCL rather than private third-party franchisees. They maintain daily automated density checks, strict filtration, and zero adulteration risk. E0 Finder automatically prioritizes COCO outlets in radar results.
